I changed this June 8 2008 and broke it down into categories - events, sites, calls for entry etc so I will close this discussion now. Still good stuff archived here though. Thanks! Caffyn

New Years Walk 'n Write, Eco Art Retreat, in Tasmania'a Tarkine Wilderness 28 Dec - 3 Jan.

Where the hell is Tasmania you ask? It's the island on the southern tip of Australia - last stop before Antarctica! The Tarkine is a pristine wilderness area in the north west corner of Tasmania incorporating old growth rainforests and a wild wilderness coast. We spend four days camping in the pindrop silence of the Forest of Giants then float down the Pieman River to the watch west coast sunsets beside ancient aboriginal middens near the tiny village of Corrina. Walking meditating, writing, making storyart, photographing - contemplating the year(s) gone by and and welcoming the year(s) to come. Beginning or established artists, writers, thinkers, walkers, ordinary talkers- all welcome.

Dear Friends,

The Backbone Campaign is working with Ruckus Society to bring both vibrant political spectacle art and cutting edge training to students, youth, and activists around the country. Please read the below email and contact the Backbone Campaign to discuss how to bring the Procession for the Future to your campus or town.

To download a brochure with more information go to:

and visit ProcessionForTheFuture.org

Please help us outreach to students and faculty who might be interested in setting up a host committee to bring this creative and unique organizing tool to your campus. I hope we can speak soon.

Procession for the Future

The regressive and illegal actions by the Bush Administration have been felt across the entire world; an immeasurable price has been paid, both financially and socially. On the flip side, however, Bush and Cheney have motivated unprecedented numbers of people to stand up for change. We need to amplify our organizing to make sure that whoever wins in 2008 hears our demands for a nation where: government is accountable to the rule of law; inalienable rights remain inalienable (and universal); the common wealth is used for the common good; and being a responsible member of the world community replaces empire building.

The time is now for a popular movement that transcends party affiliation, grounded in a vision for a humane, just and peaceful society, and living in harmony with our planet.

The Procession for the Future is the Backbone Campaign's newest project, designed to help strengthen that movement. It combines our expertise with artistic spectacle and cutting edge activist training of the Ruckus Society. Imagine a parade that animates a progressive vision for our country, then transforms into a festive theme park-training ground, a Festival for the Future, to educate and train participants to be highly effective and creative agents of change.

We will launch the Procession in Portland, Oregon on March 4th, 2008. Our goal is for it to visit 6-10 campuses/college towns between March 4th and the end of June. At each campus we hope to have 1000 students participate in or witness the Procession and the Future Festival theme park. We hope to have 250 students per campus go through at least one of the trainings. From those participants, we hope to recruit 5 'super activists' from each campus town to form a brigade of interns that take the Procession across the country on the True Majority biodeisel "Upside-Down bus"

The result will be a stronger movement with thousands of youth, and citizens of all ages trained in:
Bird-dogging candidates,
Non-violent direct action,
Arts for social change,
Freeway bannering,
Music for demonstrations, and
Election protection
We need a host committee at your campus. The host committee needs to be composed of campus and community representatives. They will take responsibility for:
Logistics-parade permits, space for the Future Festival grounds, sound system, car batteries for inflatables etc.
Promotion for Procession and Trainings
Recruit volunteer puppetistas for Procession
Fund raising to pay the fee and travel expenses for the necessary Ruckus trainers, the Procession's lead puppetista/artistic director and an assistant. Backbone Campaign will work closely with the host committee and if possible, supply matching funds. We estimate the total cost to be approximately $7000.
The increased creativity and skills gained by dynamic young activists, and the momentum it will generate through and beyond 2008 will be well worth all of our efforts. It's ambitious, but we have no choice right now; we need to raise our own and others' expectations. Please call or email us amy@backbonecampaign.org to schedule a call to discuss this further.

In Gratitude and Solidarity,

Bill Moyer & Amy Morrison

ComPeung Artist-in-Residency program 2008
ComPeung is seeking applications for our 2008 Artist Residency Program.
Artists or arts workers who work in or with communities are encouraged to apply.
Our residency program provides opportunities for local and international artists to live and work together with our team and the local community. ComPeung residencies are for a period of one to three months.
ComPeung is located in Doi Saket, Chiang Mai Province, Northern Thailand. Despite just being 20 km northeast of the city of Chiang Mai, Doi Saket so far has escaped the tourism trap. Due to its position Doi Saket is also the gateway to Chiang Rai and the Golden Triangle. With diverse local and ethnic communities traditional northern everyday culture is still very much alive in Doi Saket.
Interested artists are encouraged to apply by providing ComPeung with a preliminary proposal of her/his/their art work or project. As a work-in-progress we understand that the proposed project might change in the process.

For further information about ComPeung and for details about how to apply, please go to: http://www.compeung.org

Closing date: There is no fixed deadline, but we appreciate to receive applications at least 3 months prior to the proposed residency.

If you have any questions relating to the application or the residency please contact us:

2008 Global Day of Action - How to get involved?

http://wsf2008.net/node/738
Hi MJ and all - Maybe this is something we could get involved in as a network and or with small actions in our home communities? A day for theatre (or other art interventions?) on climate change March 16, 2008:
http://headlinestheatre.com/2Degrees08/jokersday.htm
Hello from Headlines Theatre, in Vancouver, Canada. We would like to invite you to join us in an exciting, global initiative: a Jokers' International Day of Action on Global Warming.

What would happen if Jokers from around the world all created local events on climate issues on the same day? What kind of energy could be created on this issue to, even in a small way, move responses to global warming forward?

We have chosen March 16, 2008, Augusto Boal's birthday, as a Jokers' International Day of Action on Global Warming. Obviously, the kind of event that would be relevant in Vancouver would be different than an event in Calcutta or in Rotterdam, in Beijing or in Rio de Janeiro, in Istanbul or in Fairhaven. We think this is part of the beauty and power of the idea. We have no desire (or ability) to control the event you create.
la franja

la franja no. 1 granada nicaragua february 11 – 17 2008
franja (fringe) is a form or attempt to describe a zone that is neither marginal nor peripheral because it is not defined by “others.” Instead it is defined by its own political, artistic, etc. limitations as a world of women who are critical of the status quo, as a zone of jazz that plays with being serious, coolly irreverent, and experimental.
