Welcome to the Book Group!

Why a Book Group on the Engaged Arts site?
Books are major transmitters and communicators of art.
A book can be and often is Art, visually and/or conceptually.
THIS IS AN INVITATION;
Post your comments about books that matter,
or might matter –
new books,
old books,
a book you read years ago which made a difference,
a book you just heard about and think sounds promising.
Share your thoughts about the books posted – let one thing lead to another.

BIBLIOMANCY – books for divination, prophecy, inspiration.

I keep pencil & paper by my side while reading, in case of sudden treasures – e.g. this morning, “I never fall apart, because I never fall together” from Andy Warhol.. Sometimes I use the treasure immediately. More often, it surfaces much later, a piece of paper on my desk, and the magic works all over again.

Roni Horn's Library of Ice
Judy Williams just told me about Roni Horn's work. "Excited" does not begin to describe the way I feel.
There are many comments about Horn on the web. Here's one link

Art, Book Arts, and Ike
The Museum of Printing History in Houston, Texas, looks deceptively small from the entrance, but goes on and on, one passage leading to another gallery to another passage, displaying books old and new, prints old and new, objects from aged presses to Dan Rather’s typewriter [what we librarians refer to as “realia”].
Across a passage from a display of miniature books, I found artist-in-residence Myssie Light. With ten other artists, some beginners, she is creating a pop-up book imaging their experiences of Hurricane Ike.

Ike left his mark everywhere in the area. Our son and daughter-in-law were fortunate, but they had to repair roof and windows, and shelter other family members. They took us to Galveston, where galleries and businesses are scurrying to be back in business before the end of May – everywhere things are coming back to life. A tape on a wall marks the flood waterline; Ted took a photo of Henry, nearly 6 ft tall, and myself, just over 5 ft, pointing way above our heads to the tape.
At the Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston, in an exhibition called “Contents under Pressure; work from Houston Area Teens”, “Masiel Cruz, Ashley Gonzalez, Erica Hernandez, and Gabriela Rodriguez—students from the same high school—worked collaboratively to create a dilapidated home titled Ike’s Leftovers using twigs, roof shingle, and tape, among others.”

Hi P - the books of Judith Williams remind me of your comment below and how other artists must have artist's books to share. Let's broadcast a message to all the network members inviting them to send info and pictures and PDF's to the group. I have a number of handmade books myself....

We've posted in our book/art slideshow "The Librarian" byGiuseppe Arcimboldo (1527-93), best known for portraits constructed entirely of flora and fauna. This one is an exception in not using objects from nature, but the concept is the same. Great art and great fun.

Artists' Books
Working on Judith Williams' new on-line exhibit [Watch for it!], and enchanted by her "book works", I 'm thinking many of you Engaged Artists may have your own books, or "books", to show us.

Access All Areas:
Conversations on Engaged Arts

Edited by Tania Willard

Access All Areas is a continuing conversation, started at the Live in Public: The Art of Engagement conference in Vancouver in October 2007.

Exploring the nature of community arts covering topics as wide-ranging as community arts practice itself, this publication takes a critical look at individual practice, multi-culturalism and approaches to working with marginalized communities as well as building up knowledge of the roots of community art.

Grounded in cultural traditions, protest movements, social development and celebrating spirit, Access All Areas features essays by artists, conscientious creative minds and inspired agitators Devora Neumark, Irwin Oostindie, Maria Hupfield, Peter Morin, Chris Bose, Caffyn Kelley, Melanie Fernandez, Glenn Alteen, Oliver Kelhammer, Darren O'Donnell, Jules Rochielle, Lori Weidenhammer and Paula Jardine
