I am a NZ artist now living in Ireland 15 years. My art & ecology notebook blog (see on the left) documents a SLOW ART project taking place in our small 2 acre woodland! We are turning our 24yr old monoculture spruce crop into an ecologically & economically sustainable real FOREST.

You'll also find info on my previous work on community forests in Co Leitrim -'the Local Project'; & links to other eco-art works that inspire me & which may be inspire others.

My art practice is informed by my background in agricultural microbiology research. After working in the science in New Zealand for ten years, I attended the National College of Art and Design, in Dublin, Ireland during 1996-2002 and gained a BA & MA in Irish Art History & Fine Art (New Media).

I have been involved with Crann (an Irish tree NGO), both actively and a member since coming to Ireland and I created a film and exhibition celebrating Crann's 20th anniversary and documenting its most important project; the planting of 300 acres of broadleaves in the early 1990s by the local community in Co Leitrim- known in the area as 'the local project' This project was funded by the Irish Forest Service.

Currently working, but continuing my art practice by documenting the conversion of our own 2 acre, 20 year old monoculture spruce plantation into a permanent mixed species forest and working with foresters and local community to share this knowledge through my blog http://www.ecoartnotebook.com.

I am now actively involved with Pro Silva Ireland, a branch of Pro Silva Europe, a 27 country wide professional forester led movement endorsing close to nature, permanent forestry practice and policy for ecological and economic sustainability.

Selected Exhibitions:

2008 'Burning Bright'; small personal film clip on learning about my own efforts in understanding close to nature forestry practice and reducing pollution. See my youtube channel. Selected for Irish Green party youtube film award 2009 and Carlow Eigse Film programme 2009.

2006 'The local project': an art & ecology project - solo exhibition, The Dock, Carrick-on-Shannon, later at the Cultivate Centre, Temple Bar, Dublin, Green Energy Fair, 2007 Kilkenny; Wylie O'Hagan Irish Film Festival, 2008-London. Film is on my youtube channel.

2005 Curated a Carlow Visualise exhibtion of Cornelia Hesse-Honegger's work, a leading Swiss artist who has worked since 1985, on art and science, particularly on radiation effects from nuclear power plants on the natural environment.

During 2001-2005, initiated two residencies in science laboratories in Dublin, one of which was supported by the Irish Arts Council.

Cathy thanks so very much for coming to the network and sharing your project and video. I am a great advocate for Slow Art and talk about it in the Culturing Sustainability Cookbook. We should include your project in the next version.
