What else do you want us to know?
I am an artist, curator and instigator based in London, England. My practice is an ongoing investigation into human connection, intimacy and taboo. I am interested in the borders of the public and private, testing these limits through live interaction. In my work I often risk vulnerability and exposure to make a connection, leading to the creation of tender shared moments for individuals and small groups.

Together with Ewelina Kolaczek I run Switch Performance, an artist-led group based in the UK. We work individually, as a duo and in collaboration with other artists to make, produce and enable live art and performance. We both passionately believe in the possibilities offered by the live experience. Over the past 3 years Switch has worked with a range of established and emerging artists including Rajni Shah, Kira O'Reilly, Rachel Parry, Robin Dingemans and Fakir Musafar.

I am currently the artist-in-residence here on The Art of Engagement. Find out more >>

Justin's residency culminates in live online ceremony on Tues 22nd Sept

Since the start of August I have been the artist-in-residence here at The Art of Engagement. For my online residency I have created VTC2.0 (messages for the future), a virtual time capsule into which people from around the world can place something for the future.

This Tuesday 22nd September the capsule will be sealed through a live ceremony that you can join via the Internet. I will have my lips sealed with stitches and then observe an hour of silence. You are invited to be part… Continue

Why have my mouth sewn shut?

I recently received a warm and loving email from someone, asking me why I'd chosen to have my mouth sewn shut at the end of my online residency. This is what I wrote in response:

There are a number of reasons behind my decision to have my lips sewn together. First of all the online residency series I'm curating invites artists to consider the meanings of the disembodied space we inhab… Continue

VTC2.0 update: contributions from weeks 2 and 3

VTC2.0 has been online for almost three weeks now and we've had some more amazing contributions. Each contribution consists of a public part (name, email address, website, message to the keeper) and a secret part (message for the future and attachment). Here is a selection from the public part of this week's entries:

Further thoughts about VTC2.0 - in dialogue with Caffyn Kelley

As artist-in-residence for August and September I've developed VTC2.0 (messages for the future), an interactive online artwork. To find out more about the piece please go here first.

Since publishing my initial thoughts I have been in dialogue with artist Caffyn Kelley about VTC2.0. Here are some extracts from our e-conversation:

My work

Aphiemi (collaboration with Rachel Parry)
May 09

Aphiemi is a ritual performance exploring the physical and psychic nature of burdens. Inside a cage lives a mythical creature. His keepers -- three smartly dressed bureaucrats -- invite individual audience members to share their burdens with the creature in an intensely intimate moment.

Hamstrung
Mar 09

For 2 weeks after a knee operation I received a series of visits to my home - from friends, other artists and strangers. The visits were curated by my collaborator Ewelina Kolaczek, each one a surprise on the day. After each visit I blogged in response to the conversation.

Strip in four stages
Nov 08

Strip in four stages is a live performance exploring male prowess and vulnerability in relation to women. The piece takes the form of an achingly slow striptease, performed with and for a faceless mannequin while the audience looked on voyeuristically. The piece culminates in a powerful image of male bonding through vulnerability, created safely with and by the audience.

Mehetabel
Jun-Jul 08

Mehetabel is a domestic performance for groups of three visitors. Built on the dynamics of gifting the performance took the form of a series of live encounters between the audience members, the house and me. The performance culminated in the visitors collaborating to leave a message for baby Frank, the home owners’ one-year old son. The book of messages will be given to Frank on his 13th birthday.

Just viewed Aphiemi -- found it very beautiful: disturbing, also cathartic, especially when I looked up the definition of the title word. Poetic resonances with my own experiences of relationship; carrying the beloved past the point of personal pain [dying parent, addicted friends, crippled dog...] Thank you Rachel & Justin.

Thanks, Justin.
I'm interested in connections between people, and I want to create it as artwork. I like this project as each connection I make everyday is real.
