In joining The Crone Project, I undertook to make some portraits of some very special older women, Naomi Beth Wakan (poet), Margaret Taylor(scientist and pilot), and Frances Mossop( world traveller and amateur naturalist)
These works in paper mache using books and bits of feathers, seed pods, and even dog hair, speak of the rich lives and stories of 3 older women of Gabriola.
I visited , sculpted, talked and drew these women, slowly getting ideas for the final pieces to be cast in paper mache. They shared anecdotes and opinions with me - dished out advice and recipes and often left me giggling at their wit.
At a time when I was looking to work in a new medium they encouraged me to deal with change and not to take things tooo seriously.
You can view the work ( along with other Crones Artworks) at The Gallery at the Professional Centre on Gabriola Island, BC until Dec. 6, 2009..Closed weekends and Mondays-- Open Weekdays 9-5
I hope you can see them and give me your thoughts.
