The book is called The Book of Negroes or, in the US Someone Knows my Nameand is about the Black Loyalists who came to Canada (the Atlantic coast) at the time of the American Revolution. Their story, unlike the Cajun-Acadian connection, is not well known.
I have only begun to read the novel, after looking at the background material and historical references - it has a lovely first chapter. I first came across Lawrence Hill's work when he co-authored The Deserter's Tale with a war resister who spent some time on our west coast island.

Just coming across references to Gullah in a book by Lawrence Hill, I remembered learning something about this when you came on the network. So I went looking for you, and see it is almost a year.
I was so pleased to "meet" you then, and hope you are still keeping in touch.
Ramona - welcome to this network and thank you for the link to your wonderful website on "Providing creative arts, cultural & family programming to holistically impact the self esteem and self concepts of culturally diverse youth." I am so interested in learning more about your practices in "Divergent Education" ("divergent learners who are not reaching their potential in the present educational system because of specific personality traits and learning styles, which are not being adequately addressed in the classroom" and also how that might link with your teaching in the history, language, landscapes and cultural practices from African American history - hope if you have time you might share some ideas for our "cookbook for artists and educators" discussion at http://islandsinstitute.ning.com/forum/topic/show?id=1163070%3ATopic%3A16092
