I have 30 years experience as an artist, educator, and writer. My art installations address the local manifestation of global concerns, including climate change, food safety, and nuclear waste. Most recently, my work has been shown at the Andy Warhol Museum, Exit Art, the Hudson River Museum, several northeast universities, and in Japan. I partner with trail organizations and post-industrial communities to reconnect citizens, educational institutions, and youth to their forgotten waterways as sites of common experience, history and possibility. My essays on eco/community art and interdisciplinary pedagogy have been published in several journals and anthologies.

Shifting Tides

This has been a challenging year for me. A year ago this month, my partner of 30 years passed away. I sat by his bedside and cared for him; it was the hardest, most acutely painful experience of my life. I inherited a cat, a wonderful partially converted live/work warehouse, and a lifetime of Stephen's art, collections, and stuff to contend with. This has also been a year of engaged art practice, initiating a community arts project in partnership with the Steel Valley Trail Council. Going into o… Continue

Hello Ann:
I just wanted to thank you for this part of one of your conversations.
Even on this open space some of us were certainly feeling excluded.
Some of us have not had the chance of higher education, do not comand the language as well.
Non the least we have valuable contributions to make and have experiance many schooled people have not had the opportunity of having.
Thanks
Timothy Hume

I think we have to be careful in our discussions here to not exclude people who are not familiar with the theory! This is one reason after grad school that I started veering away from it--it seemed exclusionary and left a lot of people out of the conversation and started to feel like it was for an elite group only. I do still think it is useful, that it can inform action and help us be more critical and reflective, but it has it's limitations (as does uninformed action).Reply by Ann Rosenthal

My reply disappeared into cyberspace. It was here for a while, then went away. Sorry.

Hello:
Just to let you know there is a chat room on your discussion page. We found it a much faster and less frustrating way to communicate then using the forum entries. Hope your discussion goes well.

Hi Ann - I am grateful for your open-hearted and generous sharing of your current struggles. I am also deeply appreciative of your critical thinking about all kinds of key issues that we face as engaged artists. I look forward to deepening our dialog tomorrow.
