oh yes - stories ....how did I get to socially engaged art.
- started as an undergrad activist seed by a liberal arts education - realized that I was good at cocktail parties but wanted to effect change more
- did an MBA
- helped get Doctors without borders going in Canada; worked for the Feds on a National Youth Service Initiative; Worked for an organisation that worked with Aboriginal and Non-Aboriginal Youth in Wilderness Settings
- did a BFA at ECIAD in Vancouver - found that I had two distinct practices - one that fed my inner world and another that that engaged the outer world--> decided to see if they could integrate
- Became a yoga teacher
- Went to Burningman - the broke my head open and I started working with student artists on public engagement projects
- Founded Collaborative Interactive with same students
- Began writing on Systems Based Art, Community Engagement and Technology from a Zen perspective (anybody that practices Zen will have a big smile after reading that statement)
- Did an MFA and focussed developing collaborative and engagement pedagogy
- produced a Thesis Exhibition - Samsara Unlimited: Towards and Ecology of Compassion. It was a systems based artwork that engaged students and diverse publics to create the actual artwork ie the byproducts of the system's functioning. The real product was the network of relationships based on compassion and creativity.

Here is the artist statement -

At present in resting/re-engergizing mode. Focusing on re-integrating with the voice of my bioregion and my family.

Hi beverly, I couldn't participate for long today; however, I did want to drop you a note regarding your requests for course outlines and such. I have one such course that I developed and taught at university level.

Digital Media - the art of subversion

I developed and taught a second course in extended media and brought to it a collaborative project where students worked with professional artists to alter a space in the university with performance, projection, and sound.

If you are interested I also have a couple papers written by an alter ego as part of my MFA thesis that might be of interest to you:
- Artistic Operations in the Formation of Community
-The Functioning Artist in the Carceral Society

They are in PDF format and I have found a couple of typos that I need to clean up since they were published, but they might be an interest.

Anyway let me know

You wanted stories;
I became socially engaged in 1079 when I read a book titled 'When God was a Woman' . A door opened on the singularity of the attitude towards anything feminine.
i determined to study imagery from around the world that spoke of respect for the female gender.
For twenty five years i have travelled all over Mother EArth looking for respect for the feminine of the earth and in the women of every culture I could reach.
I painted 96' .Banners of women of the world and put halos around all of them. These were carried by forty women down our streets in the eighties for 'TAke back The Night' and' Take back the DAy".
The HEALING GOES ON FOR OUR PLACE IN THE SUN AND HAS CONNECTED ME WITH WOMEN FROM HERE TO MALTA. So that the support I recieve while not from the general public who seem to qusil from this display of affection for the Feminine, but is from the hearts of those I have touched.

Hello:
Just to let you know there is a chat room on your discussion page. We found it a much faster and less frustrating way to communicate then using the forum entries. Hope your discussion goes well.

Beverly,
Thank you for your welcoming words. It is inspiring to connect in this way and to hear that you are also motivated to create change. Greetings from the Ancient land of the Appalachia.
