TAKE ME TO PARADISE - A Novel Performance

When I wrote my first novel I always knew I would perform it, in fact I called it performance prose. I’ve always written for performance - plays, film scripts, monologues, songs, musicals, performance poetry, speeches, lectures, eulogies - all fall into this category. Prose is a little different and this was my way of making the transition from a moving, lively form to a more sober, restrained one. So I played around, letting the performer out in the long monologues and reining her in (so I thou… Continue

Talking with Indonesian artist Arahmaiani

Arahmaiani is an Indonesian visual and performance artist working nationally and internationally, most recently with Muslim women in Thailand and China. I met at Perfurbance #3 in Central Java 2007. We began a conversation about art and community that continues until now. You can find more info and examples of her work on Google.

I asked Iani to tell me something about the background to her work...

" I started working on my art with social & political awareness since my early time in art… Continue

Jan - I have been away from this site for months - am on strike at York University and scrambling to make ends meet - hard when one's creative work is booming and yet never get paid enought to keep producing at a stong level as artists get so litle real support here in Canada.... I feel a political rant coming on - take care, pam

Hi Jan,
finding my way around this site. did you mean to contact you through here?
It was great to catch up the other day and appreciated your suggestions. Any further ideas always welcome!
I'll be working with older carers (60+) with adult children with disabilities.
I'll upload some photos etc to my profile soon.
I would love to network with people doing similar work.

Forgot to add the coma was during my two week stay in the hospital for a total-espohagectomy that turned into 2 1/2 mo. instead.

I hated playing guessing games with my doctor. He had the results from my biopsy & couldn't just come out & tell me I had a malignant tumor in my esophagus that was threatening to puncture my windpipe where my left & right ventricle meet. I had to get all of this piece by piece by asking questions & cat & mousing with the answers. I started dying then. I could hardly drive home through the tears.

And then I decided I wasn't going to die till I'm dead. That was 15 years ago. I almost died while in a three week, medically induced coma on life support but I had nothing to do with that. Something else in charge handle my affairs.
