Sacha Kagan is a research associate at the Leuphana University Lueneburg (Germany), teaching and preparing a PhD in the field of 'Culture Sciences', and more specifically into the transdisciplinary study of “arts and (un-)sustainability”.

He is coordinating the international network Cultura21, gathering artists, scientists, activists and other cultural actors engaged for cultures of sustainability.

Sacha coordinated the 'sustainability stream' and curated the art program at the last conference of the Arts Research Network of the European Sociological Association, held in Lueneburg in March-April 2007. Among other things, he is currently finalizing with a group of students the 'tactical media' project Leuphana21 which is a 'détournement' of the discourses of the undergoing university reform in Europe and its unfortunate 'Homo Economicus' ideology.

Sacha is co-editing a book that will be published in 2008, with 15 contributing authors (artists, art sociologists, environmental scientists, intellectuals and activists from Europe, the Americas and Africa). The book will be entitled "Sustainability: A new frontier for the arts and cultures" (VAS, Frankfurt).

A French citizen living in Germany for the last two years, Sacha's background combines a personal engagement in the cultural and ecological/political sector with university degrees in cultural economics (M.A. at the university of Rotterdam) and in political sciences (Sciences Po Bordeaux).

Hi Sacha - First THANK YOU so much for your wonderful animation of the conference, dealing so cheerfully with all the technical problems, your mind-stretching ideas in all the forums and especially in "Can Art Matter" and the Open source discussion. This is great stuff - a dialogue I have yearned for. I am trying to do site housekeeping and wondered if you could copy your complex post from real-time discussion on "entrepreneurship in conventions" - now in the Green Room - into the forum on "Can Art Matter?" That conversation continues. Virtual hugs and thanks again. C.

Hey Sacha,
While I don't disagree with you regarding Bourriaud; He contributes to a philosophical position that I think you will find much more clearly articulated in Grant Kester's 'Conversation Pieces'.

Kester provides a historical overview of art history, theory and related philosophies coupled with a deeply thoughtful review of the range of work that can be considered for dialogic/social consequence.

Hi Sacha,
I'm very interested in what you said about exploring Sustainability Art. Just this week I started a blog on art and sustainability to try to think about art in relation to issues of sustainability: http://artandsustainability.blogspot.com/. In the past, I've been involved with ecological art, but that implies an art with a particular ecological commitment. Art made from the viewpoint of sustainability might be involve that as a conscious effort or it may not. I'm interested in how art might be part of a larger conversation that we all need to become part of. We'll see how this goes, but I would be very interested in learning about your thinking on this topic.
