Summary
Sick Note cUlture gives time - that most precious of commodities - back to the over-worked middle classes of modern urban society.
The project participants will be invited to register on the work's website through fliering in London's financial district. After enrolling for the work they will be contacted by Tim at a date some weeks hence. When this contact is made he will provide them with an appropriate excuse for cancelling all their engagements for the next day, thereby enabling them to use the gifted time in a manner that they typically wouldn't. Perhaps they will go somewhere that they wouldn't normally go, do something that they wouldn't typically do, or maybe just talk to someone that they wouldn't usually have the time to make contact with.
Proposal
Whilst there is no denying that many projects encouraged by government funding are admirable, Sick Note cUlture addresses those that fall through the net of such financial directives.
The predominantly white middle classes do, of course, have roofs over their heads, food in their bellies and little of real concern to trouble them on a typical day, but are such days worth the stresses of absolute absorption in high-pressure and quick turnaround labour?
With contemporary capitalism collapsing around their office-enclosed ears, now is probably a particularly appropriate time to reintroduce these people to a life away from blueberrys, bonuses and towers of glass.
Inputting no details other than an e-mail address or telephone number (for text messaging) on the Sick Note cUlture website, the participants will first receive a message to check that their details have been correctly entered and then, after 6 or 7 weeks, Tim will provide an appropriate excuse for taking the following day off.
Following the golden rule of sick day excuses, too weird to be made up yet rooted in the realm of reality - these justifications for absence will be along the lines of The lock fell out your front door when you went out the house this morning, and the landlord has said that locksmith can't get there until later this afternoon or The verruca on your foot has gone septic and you have to go to hospital for an intravenous dose of antibiotics.
Each person will also be given an open suggestion on how to spend their day - an excursion to a town that they haven't been to for a while, a trip to a museum, a visit to someone else who they know won't be working - as well as a reminder that if they really were ill or in a situation that demanded the day off work, the world wouldn't end.
Work would cope....
